Hello Science Heroes!!

January 11, 2014

So it started with a boy being raised by scientifically tempered parents, on an abandoned island near the edge of an extinct volcano and in a gravity well.

The grand life of Tom Strong begins here. And the adventures continue as he battles exotic alien ants, fire people from the deep earth, a digital god from another universe, an ancient (like beginnings-of-life ancient) beasty and more. His adventures take him to deep jungles where he meets alien snails who hide in shells of ancient temples, into the world of the dead and into dimensions where his counterpart is a rabbit.

He encounters a variety of people …  dimensional beings, three eyeD farmers on a mesa, a race of bat people living on the moon and of course, the flying squad of nazi superwomen. Heh, yea!

His family – a beautiful and strong wife, and an irrepressible daughter, with a British english speaking gorilla (at least that’s what I think it is) and a robot butler. Now if that doesn’t blow your socks off, I don’t know what will.

Brought to you in comic book format by Alan Moore with his fantastic storytelling and art by Chris Sprouse, this work far exceeds the boundaries of comic books in the superhero genre.

In my mind, what makes Tom Strong one of the finest comic book heroes is not the fact that he fight science villains, and monsters and men and aliens and men who are self replicating things – but he rehabilitates them – turns foes into friends. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a lesson we could all use in our lives.

it begins here

It begins here.

Boldly go

Boldly go.

Oh and apart from his way to cool Hypersaucer, his Heli-vest, his Pneumatic butler (Pneuman), his Entropy Gauntlets – the one thing I would love to get my hands on – Molecular Agitators. Read the comic to know why! And don’t forget the Goloka.

That’s an old jungle saying.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted here. I’ll try to be more regular. But here’s what’s going on with me in the comicbookworld.

I’m rediscovering, the legend of the Ghost Who Walks! And what a magnificent legend it is. He is the nemesis of pirates, evildoers and slavers across the world – the Ghost Who Walks, the Man Who Cannot Die, the Guardian of the Eastern Dark – Kit Walker a.k.a the Phantom.

He draws the pistol quicker than any gun in the west and he shoots to disarm. He was one of the first masked heroes in the world – before the Shadow or the Green Hornet or the Lone Ranger.

It’s been over 400 years that the Phantom has been around. The first Phantom washed up on the shore of Bengalla and was nursed back to health by the Bandar Pygmies who were slaves to Giants. His name was Christopher Walker.

For those who came in late:

On the skull of his father’s murderer, he swore an oath by firelight as the pygmies watched. “I swear to devote my life to the destruction of piracy, greed, cruelty and injustice, and my sons and their sons will follow me.”

And so the line continues, to the current day, 21st Phantom. His name is Kit Walker, who was raised in America and married Diana Palmer – started as a nurse and now a diplomat for the United Nations, a diver and well-trained (Black belt in Karate) athlete. They married in the year 1977, the year I was born. Cool, ain’t it?

The Phantom (created by the legendary Lee Falk) started as a daily strip, making his debut on February 17th 1936. He remains one of the few who is still published as a daily in 2010.

For those who believe:

Hello Joe and Jerry!

June 16, 2008

Five pages out of the story arc – Up, Up and Away – in Action Comics and Superman. Written by Kurt Busiek.

Kurt’s stories are awesome. They leave me with a sense of nobility… a goodness. The Big S. He’s the best there is… no two ways about it!!

Up

And up.

and up

yehaaa

And oops…

oh mannnn

And whoa…

Superman

And what happens when you see Superman, returned from the Infinite Crisis having lost his powers and not seen over Metropolis for almost a year, standing by the window in your office? 😀

Awesome!!

I bought this TPB! I definitely recommend a buy on this one for anyone who’s into comic books. Imagine Lex Luthor getting his hands on a Kryptonian battleship capable of taking on an entire planet teeming with an advanced civilisation. And the only thing that ship wasn’t designed to taken on – Superman!!

Up Up and Away on Action Comics and Superman – written by Kurt Busiek and Geoff Johns for DC Comics. Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

Hello violent world!

May 17, 2008

Violence – the word conjures up images that are graphic – blood, guts, punches and more. When good guys kick evil butt all the way back to where it came from, Hollywood triumphs.

The Midnighter – a superhero who first appeared in a fully loaded comicbook about a rogue superhero team called the Authority. The characters and the books were created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch.

MIdnighter gives violence a new meaning. Where the mainstream superheroes – confront but don’t kill, Midnighter does so with a panache nobody can match. Midnighter derives his powers rom the chips embedded in his brain that allow him to win a fight before it happens (he can process a million combinations of the events about the happen and select the one that causes the most damage).

Midnighter is married to Apollo and both have adopted Jenny Quantum. It’s a long story for another post.

But right here, right now – Midnighter is the big hero (as opposed to Superman being the major hero in DC Universe although Batman gets more stories/comics published than Superman does). The Midnighter-Apollo scenario is seen by some as a take on the Superman-Batman: World’s Finest partnership taken to another level.

MIdnighter now enjoys his own eponymous series – written by one of the finest Storyteller/Writer in our times – Garth Ennis. Brought to life in a comicbook by Penciller- Chris Sprouse, Inker – Karl Story, Colored by – Randy Mayor, Lettered by – Phil Balsman for Wildstorm comics.

When a man puts a bomb in your chest and sends you back in time to kill Adolf Hitler so that his dad can rule in place of the Führer, what do you do if you’re the Midnighter?SPLATT!
When a tank fires a shell on you when you’re the Midnighter, you fight fire with fire!Fire!

“I am not a Father. I am not a lover. I am not a friend.

I am what I was bred to be.

And therein lies the problem.”

— the Midnighter
